Why Was It Made? - Product Heritage

One thing that differentiates clothing is the heritage, some clothes have been designed with the sole purpose to be cheap, easy to manufacture and be replaceable. I love to know the story behind what I'm wearing, why was it that that item was specifically made? Was there a problem that needed solving? Was there just a gap in the market for a completely new concept? Before I jump into a purchase (a high end one anyway) I'll take the time to research and find out the reason it was first produced.

My favourite example of this is the Fjällräven Kånken. The rucksack dates back to 1978 and was designed as  a school bag. Back in the 1970's shoulder bags were all the rage, especially within children. Although not thought to be more than a fashion statement these bags were causing back problems. Mr Åke Nordin founder of Fjällräven, stepped up to the task of creating this backpack. By simply spreading the weight of heavy school books and growing kids lunches between two shoulders instead of one; it seemingly eradicated bag related back problems in Sweeden.

Other features of the Kånken are the super durable Vinylon F Fabric to keep the rain out and hold the shape of the bag. A newspaper pouch on either side for simple easy access storage, a reflective logo to keep you safe and an original carry handle with popper clasp. This carry handle is the finishing touch that make this backpack the one for me. The design has not changed since 1978 only with colour updates and other sizes now available this is a proven classic.

Even though people were wearing flares and listening to ABBA in the 70s at least they got one thing right and developed the backpack that is still not only relevant but fashionable even today. If you don't already have one, get one.
